Highland Beach History
The area now known as Highland Beach was originally inhabited by the Caloosa Tribe in the 1200-1300's. It was not until the 1500-1600's that buccaneers and pirates began to settle here - safe from storms and an easy launch point when plundering transports Spanish gold. In the 1800's, barefoot mail carriers began to service what were known as "refuge houses" along the sandy shoreline and Seminole Indians made their way to the coastline from their inland origins. In 1896, Henry Flagler completed the East Coast Railway, and civilized progress began with people travelling in greater numbers and building homes on areas that were previously just swamp and jungle.
Present day Highland Beach was incorporated in 1949 with 21 free voters. The primary motivation for incoporating was the secure a fresh water supply through the creating of a water plant. A secondary reason for the creating of the town was to avoid the creation of a trailer camp rumored to be in planning stages for the area. The name “Highland Beach” was selected due to the elevation - 20 to 25 feet above high tide - being relatively higher than other portions of the land crests in the area.
Land values in 1945 were $45 a foot, including the land opposite on the Intracoastal, as that was considered valueless because of the swamp and mangroves. In 1950, it sold for $125 a foot, excluding the west parcel. Presently, the value is around $10,000 a foot!
